In the Arctic Ocean, the navigability of Arctic shipping routes has improved significantly with the retreat of the sea ice, and the 2019 IPCC report also reports that the volume and frequency of ships transiting the Arctic Ocean has increased in recent decades.
The rapid melting of the sea ice has opened up opportunities for the development of Arctic shipping, in particular the Arctic Sea Route, which can shorten the distances between Asia, Europe and North America compared to the traditional shipping routes via the Suez, Malacca and Panama Canals. Various issues related to the use of the two main routes through the Arctic Sea, the NSR and the NWP, such as understanding the scientific factors of climate change on the use of the routes, the development of technical equipment and logistics services related to shipping, and compliance with the Polar Code and national legislation of the coastal states of the routes involved, will be addressed.
This ocean forum will bring together experts from Japan, the Republic of Korea and the People’s Republic of China to discuss how they should address the issues related to the use of the shipping routes from the perspective of their users.
