In this video, I hike to the lovely Grotto Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (#GSMNP) near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Grotto Falls is on the Trillium Gap Trail and is about 3 miles (4.8 km) round trip with about 550 ft (167 m) altitude gain.
You start out at the Trillium Gap parking area on the Roaring Forks Motor Trail, near Gatlinburg. This popular and well maintained trail steadily climbs up through rhododendron bushes and beautiful hardwood forests. There are 4 small stream crossings along the way that make for nice landmarks of your progress--count them off as you go. As you get near the falls, you will hear the Roaring Fork Creek roaring below you announcing that you are almost there. The falls themselves are beautiful and the Trillium Gap trail passes below them as it continues on its way up towards Mount Le Conte. You return back to the trail head the same way you came in, with a nice steady downhill the entire way. This is a very fun and family friendly waterfall hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
