You don't need a million dollars to retire. Well - you might - but the point is retirement is not about a number. You need enough to accomplish your goals. But most of my industry doesn't teach you that. They fixate on reaching an arbitrary number and tell you that if you can reach that number you will find happiness in retirement.

Having a great retirement has very little to do with your portfolio size. It doesn't have much to do with your investment performance either. Those are tools that can help support a great retirement, but they are not the end all to happiness.

To maximize the happiness in your retirement - find out what you really want, and then pursue those goals. You may find that you can live a very happy retirement with far less than what some internet article tells you you need for a good retirement.
