(18 Jul 2016) The former coach of banned marathon champion Rita Jeptoo appeared in court in Nairobi on Monday as police continued to investigate him for alleged involvement in doping.
Claudio Berardelli, an Italian national, was released on bail but has not yet received a formal charge, with court expected to resume at the beginning of next month.
He is being investigated alongside five Kenyan men with conspiracy to cause injuries to athletes through doping.
A fellow countryman and sports agent Federico Rosa also appeared in court on Monday, after having been charged last week with six counts related to administering banned substances to two athletes: Jeptoo and a little-known runner called Elijah Kiprono Boit.
Berardelli previously worked for Rosa's athlete management company but the relationship ended after three runners he coached, including Jeptoo, failed doping tests.
The accusations come weeks before the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympic Games, causing Berardelli's defence lawyer to express concern over the performance of Kenyan athletes in light of the investigations.
The International Olympic Committee has already said it will allow Kenyan athletes to compete on an individual, case-by-case basis.
