Sometimes you see the most amazing things in the most unexpected places!
We're used to seeing whalesharks here on Koh Tao. We have two times of year that we consider 'whaleshark season'; March – May, and October – December. Sightings are common on the deeper dive sites during these times, but that's not to say that we don't see them during other months. They can turn up out of the blue any time of year, and sometimes on the shallow training sites around the island. Which means you COULD see one while doing your open water scuba diving course!
That's exactly what happened to a few groups of Big Blue students back in December. They were out doing a dive at Hin Pee Wee, a pinnacle site a short distance off Sairee Beach on the east side of the island. Suddenly, a whaleshark appears! Seeing a whaleshark while on a diving course is a lucky experience. But seeing one at Hin Pee Wee, a site not known for it's whaleshark sightings, is extra special!
Big thanks to our underwater videographer, Bridget Parry, for capturing this footage of the surprise visitor!
