Have you noticed how school dress codes are sexist even though schools aren’t allowed to discriminate on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, or if pregnant? The language of sexist dress codes prioritizes boys’ learning, wrongly claiming boys will be distracted without them. Dress codes also force students to dress according to the gender binary, which is especially harmful to LGBTQ+ students. Girls are often disciplined more frequently just because they wear certain clothing. Such punishments lead to missed class time and school pushout. Dress codes also impact certain races and religions.
