📍Kai Tak was once the Hong Kong International Airport from 1925 until 1998. Known as Hong Kong International Airport Kai Tak. And now they are building a new complex transforming into a beautiful residential and commercial area attracting visitors to visit this beautiful place.
Interesting Sky Garden venue at Kai Tak
The Kai Tak Sky Garden opened to the public last year and is an interesting outdoor venue that can be freely visited next to the cruise terminal at Kai Tak. This is a multi-function landscaped deck that is 1.4 km in length. It is designed with influence of the old airport and is partitioned into four sections based on the seasons
The deck is well maintained and you will see a tremendous variety of plants, shrubs, vines and small tress that have been planted alongside the very straight, runway like outdoor deck. During the stroll along the Sky Garden, you will occasionally encounter plazas and lookout galleries where you can view the sea and area skylines. At the ends of the deck, there are crescent shaped walkways as well.
Note: There are plenty of bench seating throughout the Sky Garden Deck. However, there is very little in the form of shade at this time. You will definitely want to bring a hat if visiting midday when the sun is out.
Couple years there is a significant amount of major construction works taking place through Kai Tak and on both sides of the Sky Garden from end to end. This will likely be the case for some years to come, detracting from the peaceful experience this venue may be able to offer at some point in the future.
To visit the Kai Tak Sky Garden, there are several public bus routes from locations around Kowloon that can take you to/from the Cruise Terminal. You'll find these on the Sky Garden website. Upon arrical at the Cruise Terminal man bus terminus, just follow the signs until you reach the beginning of the Sky Garden. If you are familiar with this location, there is also a bus stop along Shing Fung Road under the Sky Garden and near the half way point of the 1.4 km long deck. This entry is accessible by way of street side lift. However, given the amount of construction taking place presently, this one may be too difficult to find for first time visitors.
