COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12/12 Ohio State women's basketball team (2-0) beat Charlotte (1-2) by a 94-53 margin on Tuesday evening in the Our Honor Defend game.
Ohio State scored the final 17 points of the first quarter to take a 25-6 lead after 10 minutes. The Buckeyes used an extended 10-1 run midway through the second quarter to build a 43-17 halftime lead. Scoring was even at 26-26 in the third quarter and the Buckeyes led 69-43. Ohio State won by a 94-53 margin after a 25-10 fourth quarter.
Chance Gray led the game with a career-high 31 points and recorded a career-high nine triples to tie the single game program record. Cotie McMahon scored in double figures for the second time in as many games this season with 11 points. Ajae Petty scored in double figures her first time as a Buckeye and finished with 12 points.
How it Happened
Jaloni Cambridge opened scoring before a pair of Charlotte baskets. The Buckeyes used three-pointers from Cambridge and Gray to take an 8-4 lead. Ohio State extended its lead to 19-6 with 2:27 to play in the quarter on the back of an 11-0 run, forcing a CLT timeout. The Buckeyes held a 25-6 lead after 10 minutes, scoring the final 17 points of the quarter and holding the 49ers scoreless for the final six minutes.
Charlotte ended its scoring drought with a free throw during its opening possession of the second quarter. The Buckeyes scored the next four points and later used an extended 10-1 run to increase the lead to 41-12 at the media timeout. The teams combined for only three baskets over the last 4:50 in the first half as Ohio led by a 43-17 margin going into the locker room.
After a pair of Madison Greene free throws to open the half, the 49ers scored the next nine points to cut their deficit to 45-26 with 7:24 remaining in the quarter. Ohio State led 55-34 with four minutes to play in the quarter after a layup from Gray. Scoring was even in the quarter as the Buckeyes held the 69-43 advantage after 30 minutes.
Gray opened the fourth quarter with her eighth three-pointer of the game. Back-to-back baskets from Petty and Eboni Walker gave OSU a 76-47 lead with just under seven minutes to play. Ohio State ended the game on a 14-2 run to cap scoring at 94-53 on Ava Watson free throws.
