Welcome back to the channel! Today, we're diving deep into a hot topic buzzing around the Tesla community - the likelihood of Hardware 3 owners getting an upgrade to Hardware 4. Here's why I believe it's not going to happen and what Tesla should do moving forward:
Cost and Time: Upgrading all existing Hardware 3 vehicles with Full FSD to Hardware 4 would be an astronomical expense for Tesla, not just in manufacturing new components but also in the labor-intensive process of retrofitting each car. The sheer volume of vehicles needing upgrades would strain Tesla's service centers, leading to significant downtime for owners. Moreover, the return on investment for such a massive undertaking is questionable. The resources could be better allocated towards new vehicle production or enhancing other aspects of their technology to newer vehicles.
What should Tesla do? Tesla must stop selling Full Self-Driving (FSD) outright to all HW3 cars today. Here's my take - by offering FSD as a one-time purchase for HW3 vehicles, Tesla sets unrealistic expectations for new buyers of used Teslas or older Teslas. The reality is that FSD's capabilities are evolving rapidly, and HW3 might not be able to handle future software updates or features designed for HW4. Transitioning to a subscription model only for FSD on HW3 would align with the ongoing development and ensure owners are always getting the maximum benefit from their investment without promising unrealistic hardware upgrades that might not materialize.
