Overdose Prevention Education for Clinicians Treating Patients with Opioids for Chronic Pain
Treating patients with opioids for chronic pain has its built-in challenges including the risk of development of opioid use disorder and overdose. The importance of a dynamic, patient centered approach to the management of these challenges cannot be stressed enough given the doubling of opioid related overdose deaths in the US over the past decade. This brief NIDA video provides strategies for avoiding development of opioid use disorder as well as overdose prevention through identification of an individual’s risk, safety planning and overdose rescue preparation.
