The river Wensum in Norfolk is a classic chalk stream, but in common with most of our rivers, has suffered badly from historic mismanagement, over dredging, pollution and neglect.
The Bintry Mill Trout Fishery has undertaken a programme of improvements to try and return some stretches of our water to a more natural state. This is the first stage, clearing the river bed of willow trees which have been allowed to grow unchecked across the channel, slowing the flow and causing massive silting. It will be a long process to bring this stretch back to life, but everything has to start somewhere.
Next we will be looking at flow deflectors and large woody debris to speed up flow where possible and possibly some bed raising as the channel is very deep in places.
The river already has a thriving wild trout population and the aim of this work is to improve and extend the suitable habitat and spawning ground. There is also a substantial otter population.
