Dusun Medeng is a Dayak Bidayuh tribe highland village in Bengkayang Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia.
We arrived three days ahead of the Nyobeng celebration and it was a wise choice because it gave us an opportunity to peek into their daily lives especially of the women folk.
They do not have the privilege of shopping from the supermarkets. Except for a few convenience stores, most material for traditional cooking had to be sourced from either their farms or the jungle. From as early as 7 in the morning we could see them hurrying with their machetes and baskets strapped over their foreheads. Some would have little children tagging behind.
Meanwhile, the men if not hunting or netting fish in the river, would be preparing the outdoor fireplace for the ladies to cook ‘lemang’ or sticky rice in bamboo.
Here in Sungkung Medeng / Anep, the technique had a little variation with the bamboos arranged vertically rather than inclined like most parts of Asia. Fire would be burning on both sides. This variation prevented the burning of the rice, perhaps. Interesting indeed.
As we toured the village we came across many groups of young men cutting each other’s hair. A very important time to look smart and feel good as a lot of outside guests from nearby villages would be visiting besides those from Gumbang, Sarawak.
