Once again we are covering ham radio off grid, deploying a man portable ham radio station, gaining more experience deploying solar power for ham radio in the field, and using narrow bandwidth data modes like for efficient offgrid communcations.
My portable ham radio station is completely off grid. we carry out these field deployments, as part of the X days off grid series. The series is designed to promote the idea of portable ham radio communication anywhere, any time, for a camping trip, preparedness, or full on SHTF..
Today I'm operating JS8call from a remote camp in Lapland. JS8Call is a weak signal mode purpose built for the portable weak signal operator. It is a utility mode designed for efficient communications with less than optimal operating conditions. In this video I am operating js8call portable with the Chameleon EMCOMM 3 portable, the portable Yaesu FT-891 from Lapland. M0IAX operating Maritime Mobile and OH8STN/P operating portable from a field station, demonstrate the true capability of JS8Call FT8Call for weak signal communications in a off grid, or grid down scenario.
As we know, FT8, has been a dominant mode on the bands for about a year now. Its failure was limited message length, and no support for a "real" qso. Imagine a mode with the narrow bandwidth capability of FT8, along with keyboard to keyboard chat, and the networking capabilities of FSQ. That is where we are with JS8Call FT8Call.
