Marin County Free Library and the Novato Unified School District announce the arrival and assembly of the new building that will house the South Novato Library in a new 6,000 square foot facility. The pieces of the building arrived earlier this week in 13 separate units and were assembled today. The finish work will continue over the next several weeks and the library will move in the new space in November. County supervisors and NUSD Board of Trustees embraced the plan in February of this year, although early collaborative planning and community input had been going on since September of 2013. The South Novato Library is currently in a temporary building on C Street in the Hamilton area. The entire learning campus will have the full services open by the end of the year including the maker space/tech center in collaboration with New Media Learning Center and Marin County Office of Education (MCOE).
This is the final physical piece of the puzzle of a three building learning center campus. The partnership has created this learning center to provide educational services for youth and a significantly expanded community library. The New Media Learning/Intel Computer Club and the Marin County Office of Education recently joined this collaborative partnership. The New Media Learning/Intel Computer Club is currently located in San Rafael but will be relocating to this new location.
New Media Learning and MCOE provide innovative, collaborative educational programs for the youth in Marin County. New Media Learning programs are based on access, media and technology. They provide learning environments that foster collaboration for playing and creating at the Intel Computer Clubhouse. They build a social networked environment for youth to share media through their publication Fastforward. They are part of the Young Makers and MAKERED Initiative. The Maker Education Initiative’s mission is to create more opportunities for all young people to develop confidence, creativity, and interest in science, technology, engineering, math, art, and learning as a whole through making.
