India recently conducted the test of Agni-V ballistic missile with MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle) technology as a part of Mission Divyastra.
Agni missiles are long-range ballistic missiles designed for surface-to-surface attacks and capable of carrying nuclear payloads.
MIRV Technology
- MIRV technology permits one missile to deliver multiple nuclear warheads.
- These missiles have the capability to release warheads at different speeds and in different directions.
- Apart from India, USA, Russia, China, France, and United Kingdom are known to have MIRV-equipped missiles.
Significance
- This can be used for both land-based missiles and sea-based missiles.
- The technology will help in carrying more nuclear warheads on sea-based missiles considering the limited carrying capacity of submarines.
- Multiple warheads from the same missile can make interception difficult and will help India in countering the adverse situations with its hostile neighbors.
