W.S. Merwin may be the one of the world’s greatest living poets, but most afternoons, he can be found puttering about in his palm forest on the island of Maui. In the late 1970s, Merwin purchased a bit of wasteland on the island, and set about planting trees. The garden grew into The Merwin Conservancy, recognized as one of the largest and most extensive palm collections on earth.
