Knut said that Alekna is doing what he always had in mind when he threw his best. Mike Buncic describes this as the perfection of the passive left side and leading with the right foot. In my own opinion this is nearly the pinnacle of the Jay Silvester type spin with absolute perfect holding of X.
To begin with, the stance is slightly wide than shoulder width apart. The discus is swung back as par as possible. This wind up with the shoulder sets up the X/separation between upper and lower body. Most of the weight is on the right leg.
They begin the turn with the left foot pushing the left heel low and around. At the same time the body weight or COG is lowered onto the left leg in a squatting like motion. Though not real deep like Schmidt does. The right leg does NOT turn. It his held in external rotation. Think knees out like in a squat. This creates the early right leg lift off or pick up. The upper body does not unwind at all.
As they reach the South African position the left foot finishes it rotation and the right foot begins to lead the throw. Swinging out wide during the entire rotating phase. The hips are square to the sector and the shoulders are perpendicular with the discus in the low point directly opposite to the throwing direction.
As the left knee drops the right foot sweeps across in a motion similar to a karaoke/ grapevine crossover step. It does NOT turn, rather it leads with the inside of the thigh/leg/foot. The right foot is brought under the knee as it enters the middle. This is the long to short motion.
The right knee appears to be driven up though if you look at the height of the right foot it does not change. The left leg now pushes and squeezes to the right leg as the ‘skip’ across the circle begins. At this point the discus is rising to level with the shoulders as the left is brought past the right.
They hold the shoulders square to the sector and eyes on the focal point as the hips rotate under them. The focal point is where the discus points when the left lands at the front about 10 o’clock (12 being the throwing direction). The discus shoulder be 180° or more from the release point with level shoulders.
The COG is lowered as the left lands. The right leg/foot now begins to actively rotate and turn into the left. The movement of the pelvis is rotary around the body axis (the spine). This creates the bow position as they begin the jump turn push the hips as far ahead as possible. The body stops briefly as the arm rips across and they begin the recovery or reverse.
