As Iraq launched the invasion of Iran in September 1980, Iranian F-5 pilots found themselves flying risky airstrikes into Iraqi airspace. Counter-air missions were given high priority and in this video, we will focus on two missions against Iraqi airbases at Kirkuk and Mosul, flown by two groups of four F-5Es each from the 2nd Tactical Fighter Base. On these missions, Iranian pilots faced MiGs and SAMs and Capt Yadollah Sharifi-Ra’ad (also spelled Sharifirad) would get a chance to prove why he would eventually become the most successful F-5 pilot of the Iran-Iraq War.
