Why did no actress want to work with Shashi Kapoor
One of the my favourite actors of Hindi films, I loved him for his looks, smile, charm, dimples, acting, flamboyance & most of all the songs that were picturised on him. Over the years, I read about him & adored his love for his family especially his wife Jennifer Kendal. Everyone who knew him described him as thoroughly humble & a thorough gentleman. He always believed he had a happy childhood. When I was an RJ ( Radio Jockey ) , I loved it when I had to do specials. Even though he was a reluctant actor to films & theatre remained his first love he was fortunate to have a line up of songs picturised on him , that was always great. All songs featuring him were beautiful. Today while news channels were paying their tribute, one channel played an interview recorded with him a few years ago. Some of the aspects he shared on his life reflected his amazing attitude towards life & so thought would share what I understood about this amazing Person.
Gratitude: He acknowledged that his favourite co-star was Nanda as she agreed to act with him even though she was a star & he a rank new comer. When every other established actress refused to be paired up with him , she unhesitatingly agreed. "Jab jab phool khile" remained his favourite. For an actor who moved from the real world of theatre films with songs seemed artificial. This film was however a musical & the music justified every song. He says he enjoyed lip syncing every song in this film. Love this song for the lyrical story telling. His expressions justify his acting skills.Friend in Need: One actor whose best support he played on & off screen was India's popular actor Amitabh Bachchan. In an interview with the Times of India, Mr. Bachchan quotes the advice,"'Don't do these bit parts, you are made for better things'...."And one fine day," says Bachchan, "at the first shot for the film Deewar at Raj Kamal Studio, I stood along with him for the keepsake photograph after the 'mahurat', with him playing my younger brother. I had travelled from being an 'extra' in Shashi Kapoor's film to playing a prominent role along with him. " Talking about the premier of Deewar, Mr. Bachchan says, "The film started and Shashi ji was beside me in the next seat. We never said a word. Premier butterflies. But when the scene under the bridge started, the 'mere pass maa hai' moment, I felt a gentle hand on mine. It was Shashi ji's. He never spoke, but the way he held my hand said everything. It was reassurance, it was affection, it was acknowledgement, it was complimentary, it was appreciation.. it was everything that a struggling actor that had once played an 'extra' in a film that starred this gentleman sitting next to me, had never ever dreamt would happen." Shashi Kapoor however never hesitated to stand by his friend. PFB the iconic scene & dialogue from the film :Humility: When asked how was it possible to play second fiddle to Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor said that his theatre training had taught not to be arrogant to want to be the hero always. It was easy for him to play second fiddle as he never saw it that way. The whole script was given to him & he had a full understanding of what his role was all about. He looked at it as a challenge to leave his impact. Bachchan adds, "Shashi Kapoor and I became inseparables in many successful ventures that followed. Leading ladies would shy away from our projects by proclaiming that there would be nothing left for them to do once SK and AB were there together. He directed his first film with me. He remained that same cultured, well meaning, soft spoken, fun loving colleague of mine." No wonder they were called the successful jodi of Shashitabh. You can see this humility in the video below:
