(31 Dec 1976) The Secretary General of the Spanish Communist Party, Santiago Carrillo, was released on Thursday (Dec 30) from the prison in which he'd been held since Dec. 22 on charges of leading an illegal organisation. Only hours after his release by the public order court....an overtly political court established during the Franco dictatorship....the government abolished the court itself in what an official described as "another step towards normalisation." Carrillo was arrested, in disguise, in a Madrid street after operating underground for ten months. The dissolution of the court does not mean the charges are quashed, but Carrillo will now be tried in the entirely different atmosphere of an ordinary court of law
