A comparison has been made between two recently famous treble boosters and a tube screamer. Treble boosters are Pedal Pawn Texan Twang and Rick Weaver FX Lone Star Stranger. Both pedals are current copies of famous Cesar Diaz Texas Ranger pedal which is a key pedal to get that SRV sound. Texan Twang is silicon transistor based pedal and Lone Star Stranger uses NTE 103 Germanium Transistor.
As a tube screamer, well known Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive pedal is used which is very good copy of original TS808 pedals including blend option. This blend option is used to balance the bass response of the tube screamer for MID and LOW settings of the treble boosters.
Nearly cranked Fender deluxe reverb reissue is used as amplifier. Settings of DRRI along the recording are;
Volume = 5,
Treble = 7,
Bass = 3,
Reverb = 2.5
DrZ Airbrake atteunator is used to be able to play the amplifier at the house in its Max setting.
Recording equipment = SM57 microphone and M-Audio sound card.
Rebel Relic SRV pickups loeded 60 style custom stratocaster is used and interaction of pedal responses with volume knob is shown.
Comments;
I have found that treble boosters have more sparkle than the tube screamer. This is especially good while using attenuators in their max reduction setting. So, the lost treble frequencies can be regained by treble boosters.
Tube screamer’s nasal characteristic is not dominant in treble boosters. TB’s create more clear sound still with enough mids.
Texan Twang has little bit more gain than Lone Star Stranger. This is possibly it uses silicon transistor while LSS has germanium.
Texan Twang is little bit more glassy but Lone Star Stranger has better mid range definition and a bit fuller.
But as it can be heard from the video, those differences are barely significant.
Blend knob in Sparkle Drive works very well in order to add more bass and make it similar to treble boosters. I left tone knob at max because this is the only way to get SRV sound at home out of a tube screamer.
