Use a Talking Stick to help kids learn patience and how to hold a civil discussion. Author and tech hygienist Jenifer Joy Madden explains this tool, originally developed by traditional knowledge-keepers in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. In a group discussion, the only person that can talk is the person holding the stick. Everyone else has to listen and wait their turn. Eventually, each person will have a chance to talk. A talking stick can be anything that can be comfortably held while speaking, such as a ketchup bottle on the table.
