The Swedish Christmas celebration of "Sankta Lucia" or St Lucy is celebrated annually in early December and organised at Westminster or St Paul's Cathedral by the Swedish Church in London. It commemorates the story of a Christian martyr girl and sees towns and universities electing a girl to be their candle bearer for processions around the dark winter nights. Lucia is followed by other single candle holders and "star boys", singing hymns and handing out special holiday biscuits called Lussekatter. Perfect to fight winter blues if you ask me!
This was my third time attending and I am always struck by how popular this holiday is for young Londoners of Swedish ancestry that take their partners and kids along.
