The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution declared in a press statement on June 15, 2021 that gold hallmarking will be required as of June 16, 2021. According to the press release, jewellers with yearly sales of up to Rs 40 lakh will be excluded from the requirement to hallmark their products.According to the press release, the assaying marking of gold will initially begin in 256 districts. However, "There would be no penalties until the end of August in order to allow manufacturers, wholesalers, and dealers of gold jewellery enough time. Jewelers therefore have till the end of August to get their current gold jewellery stock evaluated by the gold hallmarking centre (if appropriate) without incurring any penalties.
Old jewellery that was previously purchased by customers but wasn't previously hallmarked can be sold to a jeweller without a hallmark. Additionally, customers have the choice of having it hallmarked either as is or after melting and creating new jewellery.
