" I went on a trip to Berlin a few months ago. What inspires me is the city of Berlin because it's very modern, a lot of building still being reconstructed, and I think the architecture of Berlin is amazing, I met this artist, his paintings are really really interesting, so it is something very special for us, he went through my archive, he saw this picture of Avedon that Avedon shot twenty years ago, so he mixed Avedon for Versace for this work, something very creative happened, I saw this painting and I did some print and embroidering on top the traditional way, I think something very fun came out, and the clothes are very colourful and very interesting and very new."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Donatella Versace:
"The shapes are like column dresses with a lot of volume on this side and in the back, and the whole collection is very geometric, very graphic and geometric."
A BERLIN INSPIRED COLLECTION FROM VERSACE
Donatella Versace unveiled her latest collection at Milan Fashion Week on Thursday 21st February.
The autumn/winter 2008-2009 collection was based upon a detailed study of volume and balance of the human body. The result was a modern silhouette with displaced volumes in dresses, voluminous cropped coats, mid-calf skirts and pencil thin trousers.
Short dresses with billowing pleats were kept under control with graphic bands wrapped around the body creating a 3D effect. Versace's decision to play with balance and contrast was inspired by a visit to Berlin by dutch artist Tim Roeloff, Donatella told AP Entertainment.
" I went on a trip to Berlin a few months ago. What inspires me is the city of Berlin because it's very modern, a lot of building still being reconstructed, and I think the architecture of Berlin is amazing. I met this artist, his paintings are really really interesting, so it is something very special for us.... the clothes are very colourful and very interesting and very new," she said.
Blending Roeloff's vision with Versace's iconography culminated in a group of embroidered, printed dresses that captured the 3 dimensional quality of his art.
The colours symbolised industrial tones - steel grey, cadet blue, smoky ash - are brought to life by violent contrasts with purple and yellow.
Masculine tweeds and crushed mohair were re-interpreted to create an ultra feminine look.
Technical treatments caused fabrics to appear wet - others shined and shimmered as though looking at them through glass.
The same effects were echoed in the accessories .
Crocodile skin and leather in urban colours embellished with the Versace Medusa symbol were featured.
Shoes and sandals had industrial and dangerous 15cm heels.
Bags showed the same industrial inspiration.
The collection depicted a world where contrast meets to create a new harmony, underpinned by the glamorous, sexy and feminine Versace aesthetic.
