Built on Heritage
Datsun has always been a name held close to the hearts of South African motorists. Known for fun and affordability the Datsun automotive mark was re-introduced to South Africa in 2014.
While the original Datsun Go which launched was small and affordable, it did receive some criticism due to the lack of features such as ABS, airbags and an up-to-date media system. Thankfully, Nissan has addressed all of these issues, with the latest-generation Nissan Go now featuring all of the above and some stylish new lines.
Fun Frugal Driving
Being small and light, the Datsun Go is an easy vehicle to move around town. All powered by its plucky 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with 50 kW and 104 Nm of torque, and weighing in at just 788 kg curb weight, the GO manages to achieve a decent pull-away and drive while maintaining a claimed combined 5.2 L/100km fuel economy figure.
All power is sent through a tested 5-speed automated transmission with this latest-generation model now having not only improved road manners but also vastly improved NVH (noise harshness) levels and what is a quitter, more refined drive.
Interior Highlights
The cabin space of the latest GO is a vast improvement over the outgoing model, with the inclusion of a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that offers Bluetooth connectivity, and, more importantly, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system features large on-screen tiles which help make it intuitive and a joy to navigate.
Aimed at the youth market, the new GO’s inclusion is a very smart move, the with the full power of Apple or Android dependant on your preference being able to now filter the likes of its mapping and media within the new model. The Lux model has notable standard features including USB and auxiliary ports, electric windows and side mirrors, air conditioning and rear park distance control.
Affordable Practicality
The Datsun GO is a small vehicle, however, it offers 265 litres of cargo loading space and the rear bench does not split, but the entire seatback folds down if required. Interior space at the rear is limited for adults, but the GO certainly offers enough to fall within the confines of a compact family city slicking vehicle.
Datsun can certainly be commended for fitting 2 airbags and ABS as standard on this updated GO model. The compact city car now offers much more piece of mind coupled with its updated safety offering.
While cheap often translates to not good! Datsun has certainly built a far improved vehicle with this latest GO model. Its improvement in overall safety, sharper new looks and wealth of media advancements all make for what is an affordable yet impressive car that gives refreshing reach to the pockets of new car buyers.
