About this video: Port forwarding for a Minecraft server is what you need to do in order to play Minecraft with your friends. However, port forwarding for a Minecraft server is the hardest part of making your own Minecraft. Luckily, you have found the complete guide on how to port forward a Minecraft server. We cover every single step of port forwarding for Minecraft letting you play Minecraft with your friends no matter what.
First things first though, you will want to make a Minecraft server. We have a complete guide on creating a Minecraft server in the description above. This is the first step of port forwarding to play Minecraft with your friends.
Once you have a Minecraft server, we can move on to how to port forward your Minecraft server. To get started, you will need to open up the command prompt. In the command prompt, type “ipconfig” and hit enter. This will give you all kinds of information. However, you need two things from this. Make note of your “IPv4 Address” and “Default Gateway”. You will need these when port forwarding your Minecraft server.
In the next step, we will open up the browser and make a new tab. In this new type type your IP gateway where you would normally enter a new domain and hit enter. When you do this, a login box will appear. You will enter in your router’s username and password. This is different from your wifi password, and you can find a complete guide on how to find your router’s password in the description above.
After you have your router’s password, login to your router. Once you are logged in, we need to locate “port forwarding”. This could be called a bunch of different things including port forwarding, port triggering, NAT forwarding, NAT triggering, single port forwarding, apps & gaming, game forwarding, and more. It could be located in an advanced, admin, network, firewall, or security tab. There are tons of different options for where port forwarding could be. Just click around until you find it on your router.
Once you have found were to port forward, we can move on to how to add a port forward for a Minecraft server. Go ahead and select “Add a Port Forward” or whatever creating a new port forward is called in your router.
From there, for the name or ID, enter in “Minecraft Server”. For the protocol select “TCP/UDP” or “Both”. You want to make sure both options are selected.
For internal port, external port, or anything mentioning the word “port”, enter 25565. This is the port that Minecraft servers use.
Lastly, for your “local” or “IPv4” address, enter the IPv4 address we found earlier. This may also be a “device” selection. If that’s the case, select the device you are making your Minecraft server on.
Finally, save the port forward and you’re done! Now, go to the link in the description above to get your public IP address. This is what your friends will use to join your server now that you have port forwarded your Minecraft server.
If your friends can’t join, there may be an issue with your Minecraft server port forwarding. It could also be an issue with your windows defender or firewall on your router. We have a guide on fixing Windows Defender in the description above.
