Hurricane Gilbert at the time was the strongest Hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic in terms of pressure, maxing out as a 888MB Cat 5 Major Hurricane at peak!
Gilbert's 888MB pressure record would hold until Major Hurricane WILMA would surpass it a little over 15 years later in October 2005.
