SPOKANE, Wash. -- A man was stabbed on the Monroe Street Bridge Tuesday night, and three teen suspects are accused of the crime.
The Spokane Police Department says they responded to a stabbing on the Monroe Street Bridge just past 8 p.m. Officers arriving to the scene say they found a victim suffering from a non life-threatening stab wound, and another person who was physically uninjured that had been robbed during the stabbing.
Officers say they were attacked by a group of teenagers as they were crossing the Monroe Street Bridge. SPD says one of the victim's personal belongings were taken and the other victim was stabbed with a knife.
Officers' leads led them to a home on West Maxwell Avenue and North Cedar Street. Officers found multiple individuals at the home, including the three suspects and one of the victim's stolen belongings
Spokane Police say the man stabbed was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
SPD's Lieutenant Jake Jensen said police arrested three teenage suspects (a 14-year-old and two 16-year-olds) in connection to the crime for first-degree robbery and first degree assault.
SPD says is an ongoing investigation and additional arrests/charges are possible.
Less then 24 hours after he was stabbed, Jeremy Root is back in downtown Spokane. Root says he remembers the group of about five or six teenagers who attacked him.
"I felt every one go in, and come back out. They could have been sharper," Root said.
He says he was stabbed five times with knives, one of which was at least 10 inches. Root says he was on the bridge with a man he just met when they had the encounter.
"Five individuals arrived. Talked this that, and the other about the guy wearing a red shirt. Then he ran like a punk and left me there to deal with five people armed with knives," Root said.
Root and the man aren't part of a gang, but the teens said they represented a gang.
"I do have to give their girlfriends credit because they stabbed me too," Root said.
Root was able to walk to his friends outside the Central Library where they called for help.
"If he would've gotten to the point where they ended up killing him. I don't know what I would've done because I lost a lot of people in my life," Jenny Burton said.
The violent attack has the group of friends on high alert.
"It was shock. It was fear. Like where are they? Are they coming this way? Are they going to hit the corner anytime soon? Who's next? We've had issues with these youngsters over, over, and over again," Shaunti Cole said.
Cole says teenagers have acted maliciously toward homeless people downtown.
On Thursday, Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward, Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl, and Downtown Police Precinct Captain Dave Singley will hold a press conference to address their recent efforts to keep downtown safe. You can watch it live on KXLY+ or on kxly.com.
