Daniel Sickles was a Union general who played a controversial role in the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. During the battle, he disobeyed orders and moved his troops to an exposed position on Cemetery Ridge, which arguably helped to repel a Confederate assault but also exposed his troops to heavy losses.
