Tens of thousands of Syrians are believed to be buried in mass graves across Syria, prompting efforts by residents, forensic teams and international groups to unearth these long-hidden sites following the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad. On Dec. 17, Ambassador Stephen Rapp, a former U.S. ambassador-at-large for war crimes issues, visited one of the earliest identified mass graves in Najha, around 12 kilometres south of Damascus. Witness testimonies and satellite imagery have documented that Assad's security and government agents buried tens of thousands of bodies at the Najha site, mostly during the early years of Syria's civil war between 2011 and 2012. Rapp, who has been involved in international efforts to hold Assad and his officials accountable for war crimes, also visited another suspected grave site in al-Qutayfah, 37 kilometres north of the capital. He plans to meet with officials from the newly installed transitional government to discuss ways to preserve and excavate the sites and examine the documents uncovered in various security branches and prisons. Many mass grave locations were not identified before Assad's fall.
