What is love? I mean, why do we love other people and things? What causes our brains to make us feel the way we do when we fall in love? Subscribe to AOQ: [ Ссылка ]
The short answer... it's chemicals and brain function. Different events in our lives cause different chemicals to be released in our brains and certain parts of our brains to become active that cause other reactions, such as dilated pupils, rapid heart beat and other indicators when we start falling in love.
According to Helen Fisher, who is known as THE expert on the BIOLOGY of love and attraction, there are three main elements of romantic love.
1. Lust
2. Attraction
3. Attachment
Lust, in a nutshell, is when you are turned on by someone. Attraction is when you are physically attracted to someone to the point where you want to pursue them as a mate and attachment is what sets in when you have deep feelings of union or connection with someone.
Attachment is the longest lasting of the 3 elements of love as it's a much deeper connection than just lusting after someone or finding someone attractive...you know what they say...looks fade...but attachment can last a lifetime.
When people fall in love, two parts of their brains become active. The ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the caudate nucleus.
The VTA is part of the brains reward system that's responsible for motivation, orgasm (yay!), drug addiction (booooo!) and other intense emotions.
The caudate nucleus is responsible for voluntary movement, learning, sleep, and social behavior (how you act around others).
So when it comes to love and what makes us fall in love, there is a lot more going on than just two people really, really liking each other...a lot.
