(15 May 2014) China expressed "shock" on Thursday over reports that a one thousand-strong mob stormed a Taiwanese steel mill in Vietnam overnight, killing a Chinese worker and injuring 141 others.
It was the first deadly incident in a wave of anti-China protests triggered by Beijing's deployment of an oil rig in the long-disputed waters of the South China Sea on 1 May.
Vietnam is demanding that China remove the rig and has sent ships to confront it and a flotilla of Chinese escort ships, triggering fears of possible conflict.
During a news briefing on Thursday, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Hua Chunying suggested the Vietnamese government were secretly allowing the protests.
Hua called for Vietnam to begin a full investigation, "punish the perpetrators harshly and provide compensation."
Hua also commented on a reef in the South China Sea on Thursday, claimed by both the Philippines and China.
The Philippine government on Thursday released military surveillance photos of Chinese land reclamation on the reef, called Chigua by Beijing and Mabini by Manila, saying it showed Beijing violated a regional agreement not to escalate territorial disputes.
Hua said the reef is "China's territory and if China is carrying out any construction work on it, it is totally within China's sovereign jurisdiction."
