STORYLINE:
Polish President Andrzej Duda joined marchers in Oswiecim, southern Poland, to walk through the infamous Auschwitz gates Thursday in remembrance of those who died during the Holocaust.
Only eight Holocaust survivors led the March of the Living procession, which resumed after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
They were joined by some 2,500 Jews and non-Jews in the annual march that was scaled down this year because of the war in neighboring Ukraine.
Also marching were some Ukrainian refugees who had fled the conflict in their homeland.
"I am participating in the March of the Living to honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. It is a great honor for me to be here," said refugee Vlada Podlipskaya.
The theme of the march, held on Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day - Yom HaShoah, is the need to pass on the knowledge of the Holocaust and the responsibility for guarding its memory to new generations.
Participants came from Israel, United Arab Emirates, Canada, Poland, and other parts of the world.
