Undocumented fill materials present many unique challenges to geotechnical engineers and contractors. Furthermore, undocumented urban fills containing bricks, concrete, rubble, and many other materials can be improved to a reliable performance using aggregate piers. Such was this case for this project in downtown Columbus, Ohio.
Note the use of pre-drilling on this project to be sure to penetrate through the fills. We'd also like to point out that the pre-drill doesn't necessarily reach the full design depth of the aggregate pier, but rather allows our vibro-flot to advance through the fills and then install the remaining length of the aggregate pier via displacement methods.

Aggregate piers or stone columns are often the most cost-effective option when also considering remove-and-replace or deep foundations. The installation process is fast, often resulting in 40 to 60 piers installed per shift. Typical bearing pressures using aggregate piers are in the range of 4,000 pounds per square foot (psf) to 6,000 psf, but could be higher depending on the proportions of the existing soil.
