Drinking and driving is the number one criminal cause of death in B.C. with an average of 113 people killed and 3,400 injured each year. Progress to reduce drinking and driving halted in the mid-1990s and the subsequent approach resulted in poor outcomes with high rates of relapse.
On September 20, 2010 the British Columbia Government implemented legislation that fundamentally changed the drinking and driving landscape. The legislation marked an innovative new justice system approach to drinking and driving which included new immediate, stronger, administrative sanctions for offenders, a more effective system of police enforcement and a new non‐court based system for appeals.
The new approach aimed to reduce drinking and driving fatalities by 35 per cent by the end of 2013. The results from the first 12 months of the program show an immediate and significant impact with a 40 per cent reduction in drinking and driving fatalities.
