Fawick 217 is the Circuits and Electronics Laboratory, used for circuits laboratory in the sophomore year, electronics laboratory in the sophomore year, and junior laboratory in the junior year.
Circuits covers the time and frequency response of passive circuits. Electronics covers the design and test of simple electronic circuits using wave-shaping circuits, amplifiers, oscillators, regulators and similar equipment.
There are eight benches in total, four on each side. Each workstation includes a two-channel Tektronix oscilloscope, agilent multimeter, and a prototyping board for connecting simple circuits. Each has its own signal generator so students can vary the output, frequency and amplitude and generate some simple functions. It also has some small power supplies for electronics work.
The benches also include a Keysight signal generator
And an 18-volt, 10 amp DC power supply. We also have 60-volt power supplies available as well, mainly for senior design students.
We recently added an Analog Discovery data acquisition system, which allows students to interact with a user interface on a computer rather than benchtop instruments. Students use this more during the sophomore year. The devices include breakouts with coaxial interfaces, with a signal generator side and a receiving side, each featuring two channels.
Each computer has a waveform program that runs the discovery unit, with instruments including multimeters, oscilloscopes, data loggers and digital instruments, as well as a basic impedance analyzer and a basic network analyzer. The last two instruments are not items students would typically have exposure to in an undergraduate setting due to the cost, but this system gives students exposure to taking measurements at a sophisticated level.
We hope to see you on campus soon to tour our Circuits Electronics Lab in person!
