Laparoscopic surgery, when performed by a well-trained surgeon, is a remarkably effective procedure that minimizes complications associated with large incisions, operative blood loss and post-operative pain. It also reduces the recovery time. However, the procedure is more challenging than a conventional surgery due to the restricted vision, hand-eye coordination problems, limited working space, and lack of tactile sensation. These issues make the laparoscopic surgery a very difficult technique for medical students and residents to master.
In Dr, Rozenblit's work, he focuses on computer-assisted surgical training (CAST). His design principles and their subsequent implementation address some of the limitations of the existing systems and advance the state of the art in surgical education, assessment, and guidance in laparoscopic surgery. His overarching vision is to develop a fully integrated training system that will assist a practicing surgeon to perform laparoscopic surgeries. Such a system will enhance training and provide assistance in real-time during an operation. Our ultimate goal is to help improve surgical outcomes and patients safety.
Dr. Jerzy Rozenblit is a University Distinguished Professor. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Surgery in the College of Medicine. He had served as a research scientist and visiting professor at Siemens AG and Infineon AG Central Research and Development Laboratories in Munich, Technical University of Munich, University of Perugia, and Fulbright Senior Scholar in Austria and Poland. Currently, jointly with the Arizona Surgical Technology and Education Center, he is developing virtually assisted surgical training methods and systems, and computer-guided techniques for minimally invasive surgery. He directs a Life-Critical Computing Systems Initiative intended to improve the reliability and safety of technology in life-critical applications.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
