After facing criticism as far as FDI in multi brand retail is concerned, the government seems to be in a bind and the only option before the government right now seems to be to play down this issue. FDI in multi brand retail looks tougher than anticipated. The government can neither be openly supporting, given the risk of upsetting its core constituents, the small baniyas and shopkeepers and neither can the government abort the policy given the fragile investor sentiment. So for now the policy stays and states can choose whether to allow a Walmart next door or not.
