Mixing stop-motion and light-painting has been part of our work since the beginning, which means way before the tubes. The first prototype dates from 2012, and in 2013, we released LightSpin which was all about stop-motion. This project has been made with 24 cameras in my tiny studio in Montréal. Up to now, it is still the most ambitious project we have ever made.
In 2014, while visiting Mongolia, we gave it a try for the first time outdoors. Fun fact, we never published this one as we didn’t think it was good enough. It is presented for the first time in this video and it is not as bad as we thought. But this doesn’t compare to what came up in this trip. Mastering the tubes and years of experience got us exactly where we needed to be. This video shows our first tube light-painting stop motion (an experiment), which is setting the tone for the trip and projects that came after this one. Check out episode 95 for the official ones (whatever that means)
About this series: Light-painting in Morocco was filmed in May 2018 and released on December 16 of the same year. We decided to go there after the Photopills camp in Spain mostly to find back a place we love (Merzouga) and to experiment more with the light-painting tubes and other tools. What makes this place special is that it’s very warm (we can shoot at any time of the night), and we can easily walk from the hotel to the desert.Video edits by Abraham Mercado, Guillermo Castellanos, Kim Henry and Eric Paré

--- About the Tube Stories
We're a dancer/photographer duo making our way using a tube, a feather, and a flashlight. Everything we do is lit by hand, one frame at a time. Light-painting for us is a lifestyle, and this is what we share with our audience. The purpose of the Tube Stories is to bring a brighter and more colorful night to whoever is going to cross our path. Our work has been presented on the BBC, CNN, MTV, VICE, TEDx and much more.
