This new-style art program provides lucid, 3-step insights into things of beauty around us. The theme this time is the silk fabric known as tsumugi. There are 2 main kinds of kimono fabric. One is the dyed kimono on a white base. The other is the fabric woven from dyed strands. This kind is called tsumugi when it is made from silk. Both the colors and patterns tend to be plain and austere but a lot of work goes into making these highly regarded, top quality kimonos. The tsumugi weaving technique is said to date from the Nara period some 1,300 years ago when peasant women made it as work clothing using damaged cocoons. Even today, the wearing of tsumugi is considered unacceptable on highly formal occasions. It is distinguished by its plain colors and rough texture but this hand-woven cloth is light, warm and durable and kimono connoisseurs are firmly attached to the tsumugi allure. We even hear talk of young women who only wear Western-style clothing now being drawn to tsumugi garments. It is a fabric both nostalgic and new for Japanese today.
