Today, we embark on what we didn't expect to be the CRAZYIEST BUS RIDE of ALL TIME. We journey from Jardín deeper into Colombia's coffee country towards Salento, another town deep in the Andean cloud forests.
To make this trip, we purchased a bus ticket for a "chiva bus", one of the most iconic modes of transport in Colombia. A chiva bus is a brightly-colored retrofitted truck that has been turned into a bus for transport in rural Colombia. Roads through the Colombia highlands are rarely paved, and this newly built route was no exception - only a 4WD vehicle could possibly navigate the muddy uneven terrain.
While Google maps told us that the journey would only take 2.5 hours, little did we know that we would be faced with every form of natural disaster that could possibly befall us - fallen trees, landslides, thunderstorms and white-out fog. Our intrepid bus driver managed to navigate all of these obstacles and even got us to the bus interchange just on time for the next bus.
8 hours later we arrived in the beautiful rainy town of Salento where we promptly went for some much needed coffee and food. Dinner was at Donde laurita en SALENTO ([ Ссылка ]), where unfortunately our microphone died and we were unable to share our reactions to the delicious local delicacies of garlic trout and patacones de Salento.
We finished our day with a short hike up to Mirador Alto de la Cruz for some stunning views of the surrounding jungle.
