Sail across lake Geneva in this video. The lake is situated on the north side of the alps between Switzerland and France. Lake Geneva is remarkable because it is the largest lake along the Rhone. On this boat ride from Lausanne to Motreux you will see many vineyards. The Lavaux, Vineyard Terraces span 30 km on the north shores of Lake Geneva. Vineyards animate the landscape between Chateau de Chillion all the way to Lausanne. Additionally, they fill the space on the hillsides between the mountain villages and the lake. Some of these grape vines can date back to the 11th century when the Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries governed this region. The vineyards have always been an important way to link people to the environment as well as a staple economic resource. Along this boat tour you will also see Lavaux vineyards, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These vineyards are strictly protected and preserved by the canton.
Lausanne, the starting point for this cruise across lake Geneva, resides in the French speaking portion of Switzerland. Lausanne and Geneva are about 62 kilometers apart. Located near the Jura Mountains (to the north-west) and on the shores of Lake Geneva, Lausanne is home to just under 150,000 people. Lausanne values international sports. It is even consider the Olympic Capital by the International Olympic Committee operates there. Additionally, there are about 55 other sports centered organizations that are based in Lausanne.
Next, this boat travels past Pully, which is suburb of Lausanne. It is located at the foot of the Lavaux vineyards between Vevey and Montreux.
Then you will see Lutry, located in the Lavaux-Oron.
Cully, is the next town. Its average altitude is 387 m. The village is located in the Lavaux vineyards. It sits atop small crag that protrudes into the Lake Geneva cape. Dezaley is a popular white wine from this region.
You will also see Rivaz a small village with a population of only about 350 people.
You pass by Vevey next, which is still in the French speaking region of Switzerland. Headquartered here is the famous brand Nestlé (founded in 1867). Charlie Chaplin, British American actor, even lived here in his later life. Known as one of the “Pearls of the Swiss Riviera,” Vevey offers some awesome views of the Alpine panorama across the lake. It has a very mild climate, beautiful vineyards, and paddlewheel steamers.
The last small village passed before arriving at Montreux is Clarens, before the tour ends in Montreux. Montreux is a bit more metropolitan with about 26,000 residents.
