Aristotle tells us that to become virtuous we need to build good habits through acting correctly. But how do we know whether we are acting well, or acting poorly? In Book II of the Nicomachean Ethics Aristotle argues that virtue is a "mean" between the extremes of "deficiency" and "excess." As such, the courageous person is someone whose ability to face danger is neither to weak (cowardice) nor too strong (rashness). Furthermore, we avoid falling into excess and deficiency by training ourselves to take pleasure (and feel pain) in the appropriate way.
