2 Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 send the full 40,000lbs of thrust with Performance Take Offs (PTOs) at RAF Coningsby. Typhoon PTOs at RAF Coningsby are reminiscent of the English Electric Lightning, which would leave any spectator stunned.

What is a PTO?
Well, for a Typhoon, the pilot will whack the full reheats (afterburners) on and as soon as it is rolling traffic, within 8-10 seconds the Typhoon can actually pull back and accelerate vertically. This is achieved because the Typhoon weights less than the amount of thrust punched out. The Typhoon's EJ-200 engines produce 20,000lbs of thrust each, the aircraft weighs around 22,000lbs. Of course, the performance will vary depending on payload.

Is it a Quick Climb?
Simple answer is NO. The difference is, for example, at Lakenheath, the aircraft will accelerate a level off at around 50-100ft, clearing the runway at speeds of around 320mph before pulling up to a vertical climb.

What is the benefit of a PTO?
A PTO can be used in combat where an aerodrome is under attack, to clear barriers, to avoid traffic in the airways, damaged runways, short runways etc...or just to give our Sqn Ldr a spectacular departure.
