In this video, Bob Paulinski Master of Wine focuses on two red wine values, one from Portugal, the other from Italy. Both wines were purchased at Costco, but are also sold through other retailers, along with an international presence.
WINE 1:
2019 Quinta do Portal Mural Reserva from the Douro Valley of Portugal. The wine typically sells for $12.99 at Costco, but they are running a promotion into late September at $8.99. The wine is made from 40% Touriga Franca, 40% Tinta Roriz and 20% Touriga Nacional.
RECOMMENDED, A VERY GOOD VALUE, ESPECIALLY AT THE PROMOTED PRICE.
Tasting note:
Good color depth, dense core, a bit of fade at the edge of the glass. Showing a reduced character that blows off with a few minutes of vigorous aeration. With Air, it shows a dark fruit character, good ripeness and extended length on the palate. A wine to drink over the next year or two.
WINE 2:
2019 Villa Pani Barbera d'Asti Superiore from Piedmonte, Italy at $9.99.
RECOMMENDED, A SOUND VALUE.
Tasting note: Medium deep color, vibrant red color, some fade at the edge of the glass. Bright, lifted, red fruit aroma, medium-bodied, minimal overt oak influence, good palate presence, medium length, good level of acidity with minimal tannins, with a dry finish. A wine to drink over the next year.
