In this video, I will show you Clam Shell English Paper Pieced Patchwork. This will teach you how to piece curved shapes, so the principles we learn today can be applied to any curved template.
You can use almost any fabric when paper piecing, as the paper stabilises the shape, but if this is your first go, I recommend quilting cotton. You are looking for something that feels similar to a man's shirt. It doesn't fray too badly, holds its shape well and is easy to sew.
Patchwork is ideal for re-using fabrics that have meaning, or garments that cannot be passed on because of damage or stains. It's a true women's craft - practiced all around the world in countless ways. It will be lots of fun to travel the world in patchwork and see what we might find.
If you want to stitch along, you'll need:
A selection of fabric scraps
Machine threads
A needle - I use a size 8 sharps
Thick paper - like a take-away menu or catalogue
Paper scissors
Embroidery scissors
A Clam Shell template.
