In 2013, Dr. Mohamed Helmy was the first Arab to become a Righteous Among the Nations for his efforts to save a Jewish family in Germany during the Holocaust. Although some of Dr. Helmy's family initially refused the honor because it came from an Israeli institution, he was finally awarded the medal posthumously in 2017.
