Paleontologist James Crampton hunts for Monotis fossils on a New Zealand beach.
Please note: in order to preserve these beautiful and important sites, GNS Science has prepared a guide for fossil hunters ([ Ссылка ]) which will help keep you safe while you learn about our geological heritage. We’d strongly encourage you to read this, and also to remember the following rules:
- The first rule of fossil collecting: don’t! Is there another way for you to remember your visit and record what you saw – through photos or drawings?
- Find out about preservation areas and status before you go. You can check the NZ Geopreservation Inventory for more details: [ Ссылка ]
- You should only take fossils from a site if you have good reason to do so, and then only from loose boulders on the beach or river bed, not from the outcrop itself
- You cannot take fossils from protected sites and reserves. You must seek permission to access private land, and must have the landowner’s consent to take any fossils
- It is illegal to take fossils out of NZ without the permission of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage
