STORYLINE:
A special memorial service was held for Pope John Paul II in the Pakistan capital Islamabad on Friday, to coincide with his funeral at the Vatican.
Catholics gathered in many locations for prayers in a mainly muslim country which the pope visited in 1981.
Among those who attended the Islamabad service were ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PMLQ) party members, including its president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain .
Andrew Francis, Bishop of Multan, expressed gratitude towards the Pakistani government for allowing flags to fly at half mast in mourning of the death of Pope John Paul II.
"We are grateful to the government of Pakistan that today, in solidarity with the last rights of his Holiness Pope John Paul II, our national flag is flying at half mast" he said.
The pope, who died on Saturday, was buried at St Peter's Basilica on Friday after a funeral service which was attended by religious and political leaders from around the world.
The service drew millions to Rome for one of the largest religious gatherings in modern times.
